Seaweed Art Cards
  • Hand-Dipped Glitter Candles

Let your children use their imaginations on this one. This is a very creative activity.

    Materials:
3 pounds paraffin cut into chunks
    Candlewicks
    Pencils
    Crayon bits for color (optional)
    Small beads, sparkles and sequins
    Tongs
    Newspapers
Drying rack (use a laundry rack or wire hanger and clothespins).
Large container filled with water for water bath.
    Cotton cloth
    Aluminum foil
To melt wax you will need a coffee can and a deep saucepan.

Begin by placing several chunks of the wax in the coffee can. Fill the saucepan about half-way and place the can inside the pot. Melt the wax over low heat and use tongs to add more chunks of wax as the wax melt. If you like you can add some crayon bits for color.

While the wax is melting, prepare your dipping area. Place newspapers on a flat surface and position your drying rack and water wash nearby.   Next, cut a piece of wick about 8 to 10 inches long and tie it to a pencil.

Using pot holders, remove the can from the water and place on the newspaper. Dip the wick into the wax and coat it about six inches. Let it dry momentarily and  pull it taut to straighten it. Dip it in the water and dry it with the cloth. Set it on the drying rack while you  repeat the process with another wick. Return to the first wick and  start dipping. Tell your children to dip quickly, in smooth, continuous motions, the full length of the wick. Don’t stop mid-dip or leave in the wax too long as it can melt your candle.  It can take up to 25 dips to make a candle that is 1/2 inch in diameter so be patient. In between rounds of dipping, let the candles air dry for a few minutes between dips.  Set out a piece of  foil and sprinkle with some beads and sequins. Dip the candle quickly and then roll it on the foil, covering the candle with the decorations. To seal in the beads, dip once or twice more and either air dry the candles or dip them in the water.
